Roger Williams Medical Center is a recognized center of excellence in weight loss surgery. Dieter Pohl, MD, FACS, director of the bariatric surgery program, has more than 14 years of weight loss surgery success and performs about 200 surgeries annually. He is a graduate of the University of Cologne Medical School in Germany and completed Surgery residencies in Germany and New York. He also completed a Fellowship in laparoscopic surgery from the University of Washington in Seattle.

Aaron B. Bloomenthal, MD, is the newest surgeon to join the surgical weight loss team at Roger Williams, following 4 years with the Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Newton Wellesley Hospital. He completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal/Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Bloomenthal was an Advanced Endoscopy Fellow in the Division of Gastroenterology at Beth Israel Hospital and an Endoscopy Fellow in the Division of Gastroenterology at University of Massachusetts Medical School.

How Do I Know If I Qualify for Weight Loss Surgery?

Here is a list of qualifying criteria for Bariatric Surgery:

  • You need to have a BMI of 35 with medical conditions due to weight or a BMI of greater than 40 without medical conditions.
  • You must have made previous efforts at weight loss.
  • You must be willing to make the necessary changes in eating habits
